Tullamarine airport roadworks
05May08
THE first stage in the widening of the Tullamarine Freeway is scheduled to begin by the end of the year.
The section of the freeway between Mercer Drive and Melbourne Airport's main feeder road, Terminal Drive, will be widened to three lanes each way.
The work is part of a long-term vision to widen the freeway in both directions between the Calder Freeway and the airport.
A draft version of the Melbourne Airport Master Plan 2008, released last week, also contains details of the proposed extension of Airport Drive between Sharps Rd, Tullamarine, and Melrose Drive near the airport's taxi holding area.
Airport spokesman Tom Perry said: "The purpose of these proposed developments is to streamline access to the airport and reduce congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway for airport users and local residents.
Melbourne Airport will take all necessary steps to ensure that road users experience minimal disruption during construction."
Airport strategy and environment general manager Simon Gandy said the master plan, along with the Melbourne Airport Environment Strategy 2008 that was also released last week, were part of the airport's "open and accountable approach to community consultation".
* Community consultation sessions on the master plan and environmental strategy will be held at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows on Saturday, May 24, 9am-noon and Thursday, June 5, 4.30-7pm. Sessions will also be held at Sunshine Library, Hampshire Rd, on Thursday, May 22, 4.30-7pm, and Saturday, June 7, 9am-noon. Documents can be viewed at www.melbourneairport com.au/planning/
